Pan Pastel Cast Drawing Portrait

The purpose of this project was to experiment with panel pastels. Each student chose a portrait to recreate. I sketched out the outline of the figure with graphite pencils and created the various highlights and shadows with black and white pan pastels, using both to create a gradient.

I began the process by drawing a grid on both the paper and the reference so I could accurately recreate what I saw in each box of the reference onto the final paper. I then focused on the highlights seen within the figure and placed the white pastel where the light was hitting the statue. I then worked on adding shadows and layers of depth by slowly adding an amount of black pastel overtop of the white to create shades of gray.
