Wire Portrait

When given the assignment to make a portrait constructed completely out of different gauges of wire, I chose to create a figure of a bee. I started by creating the outline of the bee's body with the thickest wire and then adding in the details, such as each abdominal piece within the main frame of the body.

I chose to differentiate the bee's stripes using a thicker and thicker wire gauge. The thicker (1/8") wire was used for the black stripes, and the thinner (1/16") wire indicated the yellow stripes. The 1/16" wire wrapped around the middle and head of the bee suggests the fuzziness of a bee's fur. The thin wires were then used to represent the delicacy of the wings and their inner patterns. The feet closer to the viewer are made with the thickest gauge, and the feet on the other side are made with the 1/8" wire, giving the legs the illusion of depth.
