A Stone in Moving Water and Before We Met You: A Journey to Adoption are a two-book mini series covering the topic of adoption.

A Stone in Moving Water is a personal memoir spanning the time from when I was adopted to the current day. It talks about the challenges a Chinese adoptee faces both internally and within her own all white family. The photos in the book are family photos taken over the years, primarily in black and white, to emphasize the story and further express the feeling of isolation.

Before We Met You: A Journey to Adoption is focused more towards the other half of the adoption story and talks about the process and other details one might go through throughout the adoption process.

The family tree symbolizes the connection between the two books. The leaves have the family members’ names on them, as well as their family connection title. Intertwinned within the branches is a red string, a motif talked about within A Stone in Moving Water.
