Soft Sculpture

I had to create a sculpture that portrayed my identity. I created a DNA strand because I, like everyone else, am made up of DNA and have personal experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. However, unlike most people, I don't know my heritage or where I came from because I was adopted from China with little information about my birth parents.

The left part of the strand symbolizes my genetic makeup and what makes me, me. Whereas the right side shows two different paths. The bottom path is a continuation of my genetic makeup and how it has contributed to the life I've lived with my adopted family. While the bottom path symbolizes the life I could have lived without being adopted.

The single connection in the chain represents the little knowledge I have about my past, and the rest is unknown. The ladder connecting the two strands represents my desire to learn more about my background, but the steps are broken because there's not enough information to fully understand the whole picture.
